The Ultimate Hot Tub Buyer’s Guide
How to Choose the Best Hot Tub for Your Home
Buying a hot tub is a big decision. With dozens of brands, sizes, features, and price points, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
This Hot Tub Buyer’s Guide answers the most common questions we hear in-store including placement, base requirements, electrical, operating costs, and long-term service so you can confidently choose the best hot tub for your home and lifestyle.

The Ultimate Hot Tub Buyer's Guide
Where Should You Place Your Hot Tub in the Yard?
Choosing the right hot tub location is the most important part of the buying process.
Beachcomber Hot tubs can be installed:
- On the ground or grass
- On a gravel or road crush base
- On an existing deck
- Beside the house
- Cement pad (great option but not necessary)
Before visiting our showroom, it helps to have a general idea of your available space. This allows us to quickly determine what hot tub sizes and models will work best for your yard.
Hot Tub Placement Considerations
Hot Tub Placement Considerations
- Space for stairs and safe entry
- Access to equipment panels
- Clearance for a cover lifter
- Privacy, wind exposure, and nearby structures
We assist with all of this in-store and during site visits
What Type of Base Is Required for a Hot Tub?
One of the most common misconceptions is that a hot tub requires a concrete pad. In most cases, it does not.
Beachcomber Hot Tubs are designed to sit directly on:
- Compacted ground or grass
- Gravel or road crush bases
- Wooden platforms
- Existing or reinforced decks
Choosing the Best Hot Tub Base
The best base depends on your long-term plans:
- Are you installing a gazebo or Covana?
- Will the hot tub be partially recessed into a deck?
- Are aesthetics a priority?
If you’re building a gazebo with walls, windows, or doors, a wooden or concrete base is usually recommended.
We are a full-service hot tub dealer. We build bases, reinforce decks, and coordinate electrical in-house.
What Is the Best Hot Tub Size for You or Your Family?
Hot tub size should be based on how you plan to use it, not just seat count.
General Hot Tub Size Guidelines
- 2–4 person hot tubs: Ideal for couples or personal use
- 5–7 person hot tubs: Best for families and social use
- 7–8 person hot tubs: Designed for entertaining and larger groups
Important Hot Tub Size Factors to Consider
- A “7-person” hot tub usually seats 5–6 comfortably
- Look for multiple seat depths for different body sizes
- Cool-down seats are ideal for kids and shorter users
- Lounger vs non-lounger layouts impact usable space

Buying a larger Beachcomber Hot Tub doesn’t always mean paying more. Some of our largest models cost less than smaller designs.

Delivery Access Requirements
- Largest models require 40” of clearance
- Smaller models may require 30”
- A clear pathway is required from unload point to yard
Obstacles like fences, window wells, AC units, trees, or sheds are common and manageable. Sending photos ahead of time allows us to plan properly.
We can temporarily remove and reinstall fences if required.
Crane & Picker Truck Deliveries
Winter Hot Tub Deliveries in Canada
We do hundred of winter deliveries a year which are very similar to summer installs:
- A shoveled 40” pathway is required
- The tub is hooked up and filled immediately
- Space heaters are provided if needed
Where Are Beachcomber Hot Tubs Made?
Every Beachcomber Hot Tub is 100% manufactured in Surrey, British Columbia.
Unlike hot tubs built overseas to reduce costs, Beachcomber spas are:
- Built to the same standard across all price points
- Hand-inspected at every production stage
- Manufactured under strict Canadian quality controls
The further away the factory is that makes your hot tub, the more likely it arrives with loose connections, broken pieces.
How Much Does a Hot Tub Cost to Run Per Month?
Beachcomber Hot Tubs are engineered for energy efficiency for cold harsh Canadian climates.
Average Monthly Operating Costs
- Smaller models: as low as $5/month
- Larger models: approximately $10–$20/month
Energy usage depends on:
- How often the hot tub is used
- Heating frequency
- Number of pumps and features
Every Beachcomber Hot Tub has been energy-tested in a 3rd party CEC-approved laboratory since 2008.
Hot Tub Maintenance & Water Care
Hot tubs are far easier to maintain than most first-time buyers expect.
Weekly maintenance can be as simple as 30 seconds of your time once a week, checking water balance and sanitizer levels.
Avoid expensive proprietary water care systems that carry high replacement costs. Beachcomber Hot Tubs use non-proprietary components, keeping maintenance simple and affordable at all times.

Local Hot Tub Dealer vs Big Box Stores
Buying from a local Beachcomber dealer ensures trusted, reliable local support from experts you can trust. We service all brands not just Beachcomber.
Big box and online retailers often:
- Import overseas tubs
- Lack long-term parts availability
- Offer limited or outsourced service
- Lack the same quality controls you get with a Beachcomber Hot Tub
We service Beachcomber Hot Tubs dating back 20–25 years, which aligns with how long your hot tub should last.
Hot Tub Electrical Requirements Explained
110V Plug-and-Play Hot Tubs
- Plug into a standard outlet
- Ideal for smaller models
- No complex installation
240V Hardwired Hot Tubs
- Most hot tubs are 40–50 amp service
- 60 amp service Required for higher end models with more pumps and jets
If replacing an existing tub, bring a photo of your GFCI or breaker panel so we can match the electrical draw.

Benefits Of Owning A Hot Tub
Warm water, gentle buoyancy, and soothing jets work together to calm both your body and mind. Increased circulation helps your muscles relax, while the quiet environment of your hot tub creates space to unwind without distraction.
Most owners say their hot tub becomes their evening reset button, the place they go to step away from work, slow down, and feel tension melt away.
Warm water makes movement easier and low-impact. Many people find that stretching or gentle movement in their hot tub helps:
- reduce morning stiffness
- increase flexibility
- improve overall mobility
While a hot tub isn’t a medical device, it can be a comfortable place to move, relax, and loosen up tight joints.
A short soak before bed can help improve sleep quality. As your body warms in the water and then cools afterward, it signals your brain that it’s time to rest. Many owners report:
- falling asleep faster
- fewer restless nights
- deeper, more refreshing sleep
If you’re wired at night or struggle to shut your mind off, a hot tub can help create a healthy bedtime routine.
A hot tub naturally brings people together. It creates a screen-free zone where conversations happen and everyone slows down for a while. Couples enjoy reconnecting at the end of the day, and families love having a place to relax and talk without distractions.
For many customers, the hot tub becomes the most-used space in the backyard — and where some of the best conversations happen.
Hydrotherapy is one of the most appreciated benefits of hot tub ownership. The combination of heat, massage jets, and buoyancy can help with:
- back, neck, and shoulder tension
- sore muscles after work or exercise
- general stiffness from sitting or aging
Improved blood flow and reduced pressure on joints allow your body to relax and recover more comfortably.
Your Own Private Wellness Spa
With a hot tub at home, relaxation is always ready when you are. No appointments, no travel, no sharing public facilities, just clean, warm water whenever you want it. It’s perfect for:
- post-work recovery
- morning coffee soaks
- quiet self-care time
- meditation or reflection
Your hot tub becomes your personal retreat, right outside your door.
